The North Carolina Tar Heels came into the NCAA Tournament as one of the No. 1 seeds but as 66 other teams have or will eventually, left broken hearted.
They fell to No. 4 seed Alabama by a score of 89-87 despite having a late lead. After the game, their RJ Davis, who had a tough shooting night, was taking a lot of heat. The senior out of New York ended up with 16 points, but his shot was not falling by any means. He went 4-of-20 from the field, and missed all nine of his threes. While the heartbroken Davis was discussing his performance, former Stanford guard Cormac Ryan made sure to intervene to let his teammate and the media know just how talented and important Davis is.

“I’ve got to chime in here. You guys can write whatever you want about tonight’s game. You could talk about RJ, you could talk about the stats. You could talk about whatever. We would not be in this position today without RJ Davis and Armando Bacot. Carolina wouldn’t be in this position today without these two guys.
“And so, say what you want, there’s just not a true fiber in your being that could actually believe that anything that happened tonight could be the result of something RJ did wrong because RJ’s done something incredible for this team. He’s done stuff that’s never been done before. He’s one of the greatest Tar Heels of all time. And for anybody to come and say something negative about RJ is unacceptable, and I’m just going to say that.”
While the season didn’t end how they hoped, the Tar Heels were able to bounce back after missing the tournament last season. Davis, who Ryan made sure to defend was a large reason why, as he led the team in scoring with 21.2 points per game, and was also named the ACC Player of the Year. He was also pivotal in their championship run a couple of years back.
As for what’s next for Bacot, Davis, and Ryan is to be seen, but clearly they have a bond that will last a lifetime and memories that they can treasure forever.
Ryan, who started his career at Stanford back in 2018-19 transferred to Notre Dame where he played for three seasons before transferring to North Carolina. Over the course of his five-year career, he averaged 10.4 points per game nearly two assists, four rebounds, and shot 35% from deep.
