NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Detroit Tigers finalized their 2024 coaching staff on Monday.
The will be four new coaches on manager A.J. Hinch’s 11-man staff: Third base coach Joey Cora; first base coach Anthony Iapoce; assistant hitting coach Lance Zawadzki; and catching coach Ryan Sienko.
Zawadzki replaces James Rowson, who was hired by the New York Yankees. First base coach Alfredo Amezaga was not retained. Tim Federowicz, who served as catching coach in 2023, will be manager at Triple-A Toledo in 2024.
Gary Jones, the third base coach in 2023, will move into the dugout and have various responsibilities, including infield work.
Zawadzki, 38, was the hitting coordinator in the Boston Red Sox player development system (2022-23). Previously, he served as hitting coach at various Red Sox affiliates: Double-A Portland (2020-21) Class A Salem (2019) and Class A Lowell (2018).
Zawadzki played 11 pro seasons after being selected in the fourth round in 2007 out of Lee University. He played in 20 games for the Padres in 2010, which was his only big-league experience.
Iapoce, 50, spent the 2023 season as manager in Toledo. He was the Red Sox’ Senior Hitting Coordinator in 2022. He has six years of experience as a big-league hitting coach with the Chicago Cubs (2019-21) and Texas Rangers (2016-18).
Iapoce played 11 seasons in the minor leagues and independent ball.
Sienko, 48, joined the Tigers in 2021 as the Director of Coaching and Field Coordinator. He previously spent six seasons as a catching coordinator with the Dodgers.
Sienko played college ball at the University of Iowa and has minor-league and indy league playing experience.
Cora, a 58-year-old native of Puerto Rico, played parts of 11 seasons in the big leagues. He went into coaching after his retirement and has made stops with the Chicago White Sox, Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates and Mets over the last two decades.
Cora’s younger brother Alex, is the current manager of the Boston Red Sox and served as A.J. Hinch’s bench coach with the Houston Astros in 2017.
“All of these guys make players better,” Hinch said of the new hires. “They all have a development background; they all have a coordinating background; and they’ve all done a ton of things to be the best at what they do.”
