The Dallas Mavericks have one season under their belt after a contentious 2023 campaign finale. Despite missing the playoffs and ending up with the No. 10 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, they were fined $750K for declaring their intention to lose in order to increase their chances of maintaining the pick.
The confusing aspect, though, is that the Mavericks chose to focus on the long term even though they still had a chance to qualify for the play-in round.
Even though it was an expensive choice, it worked out. The Mavericks are headed to the 2024 NBA Finals, less than a full year after having a top-10 pick—something Luka Doncic called “insane.”
