With Kentucky University’s recent disappointing loss to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, there’s a lot of talk about the current status of John Calipari as the team’s head coach. Former Wildcats DeMarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo had that uncomfortable conversation that many Kentucky fans are most likely having now as both former NBA players brought up vital points about the direction of Kentucky basketball.
Cousins believes that Kentucky shouldn’t let go of Calipari because that would mean everything he brings to the table, such as his ability to recruit top-end talent and lead a prestigious collegiate basketball program, amongst other things, will disappear if he walks out the door.
“I don’t understand how we get to the point where our next-best option is to replace this coach,” Cousins said in the “Bully Ball” podcast. “That doesn’t even make sense to me. With what? … Everything Calipari brings to a program is going to go down if they replace this guy. Everything is going down,” Cousins added.
Rondo begs to differ
Meanwhile, Rondo, who spent two years in Kentucky, believes that the program will not lose its reputation even if Calipari no longer coaches. While the two-time champion didn’t advocate firing the longtime Wildcats coach, the point guard believes that Kentucky will always be an elite recruitment powerhouse because it’s a prestigious brand in college basketball.

“I disagree with that,” Rondo responded. “It is UK. It is the brand. … I never said fire Cal, I said that clearly. I never said we should replace him. All I’m saying is he has to get the guys to buy in.”.
Rondo also added that winning one championship, specifically in 2012, shouldn’t be a reason for Calipari or any other coach to stay. If the team has consistently experienced one disappointing year after another then it’s time to assess whether or not the problem is internal.
“Don’t give me enough. It’s been over a decade,” Rondo said. “It’s about what have you done for me lately. … It’s the University of Kentucky, Cuz. Don’t disrespect the University of Kentucky. It’s been one of the greatest colleges of all-time before Cal got there. He didn’t just come there and accept the standard that it’s winning basketball now. They have been that.”
Calipari vows to make changes
There’s no word yet as to the status of Calipari moving forward, but the head coach has spoken since his team’s disappointing exit this season. He vows to work extra hard for the program in the coming months to address their biggest issues moving forward.
Calipari is not surprised with the conversations happening right now in Lexington and beyond. In fact, this is what he expected after losing to Oakland last Thursday. He’s well aware that all eyes will be on him moving forward as he promises to deliver more than he ever has before.
