SAD NEWS: Lakers update head coach just summitted his resignation letter to the management.
Syracuse, N.Y. — Skaneateles football coach Joe Sindoni, who emerged from a summer of turmoil to lead the Lakers to another sectional crown this fall, said Tuesday night he has turned in his resignation to the school district.
Sindoni, 46, said his entire staff has resigned as well. Sindoni was 59-14 with the Lakers, including a state title in 2017.
Sindoni and the school district had been embroiled in a legal fight over his job status since last spring. The district decided not to renew Sindoni’s contract after his peripheral involvement in a Turkey Bowl pickup game of current and former players last Thanksgiving that it deemed inappropriate during the coronavirus pandemic.
The decision sparked a huge community uproar and dozens of letters of support from Sindoni backers to the board. Sindoni denied any wrongdoing and sued for reinstatement. Onondaga County Supreme Court Gerard Neri granted a temporary injunction in his favor, and Skaneateles reappointed him while at the same time appealing Neri’s injunction.
Sindoni coached the abbreviated spring season and held his position through this fall in advance of a district appeal and a final court ruling.
Sindoni said all those legal issues are now laid to rest and they did not play a part in his decision to leave now. He said he planned all along to leave after this season as part of a promise he made to his 2018 freshman to see their careers through. He said he also wants to spend more time with his four children.
