KMVT/KSVT — RUPERT, Idaho Even though high school athletics are finished for the year, one baseball player from Minico is going to Atlanta, Georgia to play on the diamond and showcase his background.
Cole Huff, who will graduate from Minico High School next year, was chosen as one of 50 players worldwide to participate in the Atlanta Braves Native American All-Star Showcase, which takes place the following week.
As implied by the name, only children of Native American origin are eligible to participate. Huff will represent the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, a North Dakota-based band, which is the mother of Michelle.
In the showcase, he will also be representing Idaho.
On the first day of the event, collegiate and professional coaches lead pro-style drills and practices. Later that evening, players and their family can attend activities, which includes the Sunday afternoon championship game.
Huff talked about the significance of this chance for him.
“I can’t wait. Since I’m aware that not many children get to go, I’m appreciative of the chance. I’m thrilled about the chance to represent all of my ancestors—my grandparents, great-grandparents, their mothers, fathers, and grandparents—even though I won’t be the best child there by any means, Huff said.
In a little under a week, Huff and his family will go to Atlanta to represent the tribe and the state.
The Atlanta Braves’ home field, Truist Park, will host the game on Sunday afternoon of next week.
