The Bears signed veteran receiver/return specialist DeAndre Carter to a one-year contract on Tuesday, the team announced.
Carter, 31, appeared in four games with the Bears in 2020.
He has played 94 games in six seasons, with 21 starts, for the Eagles (2018), Texans (2018-20), Bears (2020), Commanders (2021), Chargers (2022) and Raiders (2023). He has caught 108 passes for 1,259 yards and six touchdowns, averaged 22.4 yards with one touchdown on 118 kickoff returns and averaged 9.8 yards on 132 punt returns.
His most productive season on offense came in 2022 with the Chargers. Carter established career highs with 46 receptions and 538 yards and matched a career high with three touchdown catches.
In 17 games with the Raiders in 2023, Carter caught four passes for 39 yards and averaged 23.8 yards on 11 kickoff returns and 9.7 yards on 24 punt returns.
One of the Steelers’ receivers is no longer with the team.
Denzel Mims is being waived by Pittsburgh, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.
In July of last year, Mims—a 2020 second-round pick of the Jets—was traded to the Lions. With an injury designation, he was dismissed in the middle of August and went on to Pittsburgh’s practice squad in October.
Mims signed a futures contract with the Steelers in January after not playing in a single regular-season game.
Mims has made 42 catches for 676 yards in 30 career games, 15 of which he has started.
The Dolphins have signed Calais Campbell. He had his first meeting with reporters on Monday.
Will he play outside or inside on the Miami defensive line was one crucial concern.
“Yes, I will perform everywhere,” Campbell declared. We’re going to switch things up a little bit depending on the situation, but knowing [defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver] and his mentality, we haven’t really discussed how they want to use me. Although there are a number of different packages and lines configurations you can use with this defense, I would be shocked if I didn’t play position on the D-line at some point during the season during key gaps.
Still, he feels a particular connection to one place on the line.
“Wink Martindale used to tell me all the time that God drew you up perfectly for the 5-technique position when he created the football game,” Campbell recalled. “I feel as though I can play any position, right? I mean, I feel as though I can play left, right, 1-technique, 2i, 3, 4i, and 5. I am able to play the entire 9[-technique]. I enjoy playing hand in mud more than standing up, but I can play any position on the D-line, and I’m proud of the fact that I can do it well. I believe it’s probably what makes me special, but that 5[-technique] is where I feel the strongest and most proficient.
Therefore, I do believe he is correct, and I continue to believe I am very dominant in that 5[-technique], particularly in the run game. Set the edge, like you’re not running that ball, he advised me. I’m really proud of ensuring that you won’t run the ball in my gap or in my direction at all. Additionally, I believe that studying the game and learning about teams’ patterns and what they can accomplish with various formations allows me to be a bit more aggressive, take some risks, and make plays that I shouldn’t be making. However, the plays I have to make in a five-technique are 100% required; you can’t run or something else needs to happen. Something wasn’t right; something had occurred. However, I still believe I have a lot of juice in the pass rush role, so it’s a nice combination, and I take great satisfaction in being one of the best run-stopping 5-techniques to ever play this game.”
In addition to his vast experience, Campbell is familiar with the defensive Weaver will set up in Miami. He will turn 38 later this year, but he still appears full of energy. And for the first time since his rookie season, he hopes to return to the Super Bowl in Arizona.
“That’s a big reason why I signed here, because I feel like there’s a really good opportunity here,” Campbell stated. “Very talented squad on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. We’ll be a force to be reckoned with when you look over your roster and see how many players I think we can play with and develop the necessary team chemistry. I think the coaching staff is great. I mean, one of the main reasons I genuinely trust in this squad is Anthony Weaver, a guy I know well and admire greatly. I’m confident that this defense will be excellent since I am aware of his work ethic and character. Without getting too carried away, I think it will be a strong defense.
Their offensive is already quite strong. The Dolphins will be among the league’s most evenly matched teams if they can pull off both sides of the bargain.
