It was believed today that Newcastle United had submitted a fourth bid of around £65 million for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
That bid met what was widely believed to have been Palace’s valuation of the England centre-back, so confidence was high that the deal was there to be done.
However, The Telegraph are now reporting that the bid has been rejected with Palace saying that no offer has yet to meet their demands which are now, suddenly in excess of £70 million.
It’s time to walk away now. Steve Parish and Crystal Palace are just taking the piss, moving the goalposts, coming out and publicly discussing the bid. They’re not playing the game so we should just walk away.
Palace have been playing silly games since day one
I personally really wanted Marc Guehi to be a Newcastle player, others in the office weren’t as keen, but I felt that he would be a huge signing for us and that’s why I wasn’t too bothered that the club were sticking in and going toe-to-toe with Palace.
However, after Parish’s behaviour this week, plus the club throwing Guehi out to talk to Sky Sports despite all the ongoing talks, and now moving the goalposts, enough is enough.
There are other defenders out there, they may not have the same pedigree as Guehi, or the same Premier League experience, but their current club’s are likely to be a lot more reasonable to deal with.
It’s time to find someone else
Crystal Palace will get another season out of Guehi, for sure, unless we return in January for another go, but next summer when he has just 12 months left on his deal and he gets sold for less than £40 milllion, they may regret this posturing.
We’ll have to see how things pan out now. The Magpies may still try again – as we said earlier today, the two clubs must be at a point now where they are in constant dialogue, they must know each other’s positions, so it could all be gamesmanship at this point.
However, as a fanbase, I think the Newcastle fans have had as much as they can take going off Social Media reaction.
