Nine minutes. That’s how long the Gambia squad were in the air before the flight heading to January’s Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast turned back, the pilot opting to perform the U-turn amid a loss of cabin pressure and oxygen.
Afterwards, coach Tom Saintfiet insisted his players “could have died” without the emergency landing back in the capital of Banjul.

Emergency services are in attendance at an incident near the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
North Wales Police say that roads surrounding the site have been closed whilst officers deal with “an incident”.
Several people have been in touch this afternoon regarding a ‘large emergency services presence’ in the area, with reports that North Wales Police, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service all in attendance.
A police spokesperson said: “The roads surrounding the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct are closed and we are kindly asking people to avoid the area for the time being, and take alternative routes where possible.”
