My Condolence: New York Yankees head coach (Aaron Boone) and his one year old baby die in a car crash…..
As the New York Mets thrashed the New York Yankees in two straight games, this year’s Subway Series took an unexpected turn. Tuesday night at Citi Field, the home team defeated Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, then on Wednesday, they crushed the pinstripes, 12-2.
This year’s crosstown rivalry has a new dimension thanks to Luis Severino. Severino played for the Yankees for the first nine seasons of his career, and he was occasionally considered the team’s next great pitcher. But his last three seasons in the Bronx were marred by injuries and inconsistent play. Severino chose to simply transfer to the Mets after he became a free agent last winter.
From the dugout on Wednesday night, the righty watched his new squad thrash his former team. Reporters later sought his distinct viewpoint on what it’s like to play for both of NYC’s major league clubs, and Severino had a perfect statement to encapsulate it.
Severino said that “having a beard” was the main distinction between playing for the Yankees and the Mets.
The pitcher continued with a more thought-out and fascinating response that had little to do with the controversial facial hair policy of the pinstripes.
“For me, getting here, getting to know everybody, this is definitely just a little bit, I would say, more calm when you come here,” Severino stated to reporters. “I’m not sure if it’s because there’s a little less pressure on us, or if nobody is expecting us to win this year. It’s like, come on, just win games, and we’ll find out what happens at the end of the season. However, as everyone is aware, we are the Yankees, and we had to play if we wanted to win the division.”
What makes the Subway Series outcomes so stunning is the disparity in expectations that Severino discusses. For the first time since early May, when the team’s announcers were experiencing an existential crisis about how awful the game was, the Mets are back at.500 thanks to the two victories. The 53-27 Philadelphia Phillies now hold the title of “best record in baseball,” which the Yankees previously had.
However, it might not come as a huge surprise. In their last 19 games, the Mets have won 15 of them. Baseball is often just about who’s hotter, and the Mets are currently hotter than almost every other team in the league.
They triumphed over the Yankees in the first round of their yearly rivalry series as well. When the Mets visit the Bronx for a second two-game series in late July, the pinstripes will have their opportunity for retribution.
