The Detroit Lions have experienced a quick ascent to the top of the NFC North since head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes took over the organization.
A big part of that stems from their first move after taking the reins, a trade that sent franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a number of picks and quarterback Jared Goff.

After struggling in his first season with the organization, Goff has enjoyed a career renaissance and is now playing the best football of his career for Detroit. With him leading the way last year, the Lions came up just short of a Super Bowl appearance.
Now, the expectations are high as ever for Goff and the Lions. Heading into the 2024 campaign, many believe the Lions have serious aspirations to contend for a Super Bowl.
In the eyes of quarterback guru Yogi Roth, a Pac-12 Network analyst and Elite 11 quarterback coach, Goff has the potential to be one of the top performers in the league this season.
“I think Jared Goff has a chance to win the MVP and take his team to the Super Bowl,” Roth said on a recent episode of Up & Adams with host Kay Adams. “I’ve been around Jared Goff and I think that where he sits now, the comfort in his own feet, who he is, the way he’s played and what he did last year and what this team believes in moving forward, I am all in on the (Lions).”
Last season, Goff piloted the offense at an elite level. He threw for 4,575 yards and 30 touchdowns, coming up just short of career best totals in each category. He’s in the market for a contract extension that would keep him in Detroit for the foreseeable future.
Detroit has also improved around him, on both sides of the ball. As a result of their success and the endearing nature of their culture, the Lions have become a desirable destination for free agents looking to prove their worth while competing for a division title.
“Detroit’s going to be a destination place because they have a chance to win and they have a coach that players are going to want to play for,” said ESPN analyst Mike Tannenbaum on a conference call Wednesday. “And when people are at the back end of their careers and they have a year or two left, money is always going to matter but Dan Campbell’s going to be a reason people are going to want to be a Detroit Lion.”
