On Tuesday at Xcel Energy Center, the Minnesota Wild announced John Hynes as their new head coach prior to the morning skate.
FOX 9 MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Wild missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in five years as John Hynes just wrapped off his rookie campaign.
Hynes was appointed head coach of the 2024 U.S. Men’s National Team on Friday. They will compete in the IIHF World Championships in Ostrava, Prague, and the Czech Republic from May 10–26. Hynes began his NHL career in 2015 with the New Jersey Devils and played for them until moving to the Nashville Predators in 2020–2023. After a dismal start to the season, Bill Guerin fired Dean Evason, and Hynes was appointed head coach of the Wild.

The Wild’s 39-33-10 record at the end of the 2023–24 campaign meant that their 88 points were insufficient to secure a postseason berth. After taking Evason’s place, he went 34-24-5.
Hynes will be joining the U.S. Men’s National Team for the third time. At the World Junior Championships, he took home three medals with the Under-18 squad: bronze in 2008, silver in 2004, and gold in 2006. He served as an assistant on the gold-winning squad in 2004. From 2003 until 2009, Hynes led USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.
