The NFL released a statement stating that Butker’s “views are not those of the NFL as an organization” after he called Pride Month “a deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it” and said that women should prioritize being wives and raising children over entering the job.

The quarterback for the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, added that although they “may not always agree on things,” he thinks Butker is a “good person.” An analogous sentiment was expressed by head coach Andy Reid, who said that the NFL is a “microcosm and everyone has their own beliefs.”

Butker’s reaction to the speech at the Regina Caeli Academy’s Courage Under Fire banquet in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday night was covered by an ESPN story. According to Butker, “It is now, over the past few days, my beliefs or what people think I believe have been the focus of countless discussions around the globe,” said Friday. “A startling amount of hate was expressed by many people right away. But as the days passed, even people who didn’t agree with me expressed support for my right to practice my religion.”
“It’s a decision I’ve consciously made and one I do not regret at all,” said Butker. The kicker also made it clear that, to him, faith is considerably more important than football. That’s excellent news if the league intends to penalize anyone for the remarks made.
