DETROIT — Willi Castro hit a two-run home run as the Minnesota Twin finished off a doubleheader sweep of the Detroit Tigers in a 4-1 victory Saturday evening at Comerica Park.
The Twins (6-7) and Tigers (8-6) wrap up their four-game series on Sunday. Both teams will be exhausted, but the Tigers perhaps doubly so because they have nothing to show for 21 innings of baseball.
The Tigers managed only two hits off Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson, who went six innings in the fourth start of his big-league career.
Twins second baseman Edouard Julien’s solo homer in the third was the first allowed this year by Tigers starter Matt Manning, who had thrown eight hitless innings over his first two starts.
Castro, who spent four seasons with the Tigers before signing with the Twins, homered to deep right-center in the sixth inning.
Rookie outfielder Wenceel Perez was one of the only bright spots for the Tigers. He dove headfirst into first base to secure his first big-league hit in the second inning. Then he swiped second base for his first career steal.
He added his first extra-base in the seventh inning. It was a true hustle double as he never tapped the brakes rounding first.

After Manning’s exit, Tigers lefty Joey Wentz preserved the rest of the Tigers’ bullpen for Sunday by pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four.
BOX SCORE
Up next: The Tigers and Twins wrap up their four-game series on Sunday at 1:40 p.m.
Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty will face Twins right Bailey Ober.
Flaherty signed a one-year deal worth $14 million with the Tigers last December.
He allowed just a run on four hits in six innings in his first start on March 31 at Chicago. He struck out seven White Sox without issuing a walk.
His second start didn’t go as well. Flaherty allowed six runs in six innings against Oakland on April 7. He retired the final six batters he faced.
Ober allowed eight runs on nine hits and retired only four batters in his first start on March 31 at Kansas City.
But he bounced back from that disaster with a solid start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 8.
Ober was selected by the Twins in the 12th round of the 2017 draft out of the College of Charleston.
