Liverpool’s move for Anthony Gordon relies on Newcastle falling back into financial disarray, according to Michael Owen.
While the 23-year-old winger was in Germany with Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, his name was endlessly linked with a switch to Anfield – where he would’ve become Arne Slot’s first recruit.
This was before the start of July, however, when clubs were in panic mode, attempting to balance their books as the Premier League’s profit and sustainability deadline loomed.
The Magpies have since lost the inclination to let their star forward go, and any cut-price deal, reportedly as low as £30million, is entirely off the table. However, Anfield icon Owen believes that the Gordon move isn’t completely extinguished, and should Newcastle find themselves economically burdened once again, then Slot’s side could pounce.
The sales of promising youngster Yankuba Minteh and academy product Elliot Anderson raised the £68m that tipped Newcastle’s financial scales into favour this summer – but should they find themselves in a similar situation again, Gordon could be sacrificed.
“There’s no doubt Anthony Gordon is a talented boy,” Premier League legend Owen told Casino Hawks. “Obviously, there’s a little bit of history there, being an Everton player and now being up in Newcastle.

“I can’t imagine, unless Newcastle are suffering with the money side of things, then I can’t imagine they’ll want to get rid of one of their most exciting young players.
“He’s done really well at Newcastle since he’s been there, so I’m sure Eddie Howe is desperate to keep him. I’m not sure how credible that story can be, but that is the type of player, if somebody like that came available, then of course that’s the type of player Liverpool should be interested in.”
There is no doubt that interest from his boyhood club unsettled the Newcastle winger. It was reported that he discussed the move with his England team-mates in their camp at the Euros in Germany.
