NY Yankees News: Legendary Manager Surprises Fans with Mound Visit at Spring Training
Legendary New York Yankees manager Joe Torre made a familiar walk from the dugout to the mound on Monday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field. In full uniform, he approached starting pitcher Carlos Rodón and took the ball from him.
After 5 2/3 hitless, scoreless innings against the Phillies, Torre signaled to the bullpen and made his first pitching change for the Yankees in over a decade. Yankees fans in attendance gave him a well-deserved standing ovation.
“I look up and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s Joe Torre. I should give him the ball,'” Rodón said. “It was cool. Everybody knows who Joe Torre is, and he got a nice ovation coming out there.”

Torre was joined by former players Bernie Williams and Andy Pettitte as guest instructors at Yankees camp this week but the plan to get the Skipper in uniform took current manager Aaron Boone a few days.
“I’ve been working on it for a couple of days,” Boone said. “My first goal was to get him in [uniform], and that happened in pretty short order. I wasn’t sure he was going to do that, so that was awesome. These last two times, I’ve been working on it with him. Today, he was like, ‘All right, let’s go.'”

Torre was at the helm of the Yankees from 1996 to 2007. He won four World Series and six American League pennants. Boone played for Torre in 2003. According to Dan Martin of the New York Post, Torre is expected to stick around for four or five days, and his main goal, he said, was to give Boone his space.
“The last thing I want to do is get in the way of Boone doing his job,” Torre said. “He gave me free reign here.”

Torre also managed the Los Angeles Dodgers for three years beginning with the 2008 season. He retired from managing after the 2010 season and was elected unanimously by the Expansion Era Committee into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. He is currently Major League Baseball’s Special Assistant to the Commissioner.
