What’s the connection between the Chicago Bears and Taylor Swift? They both arrived in Edinburgh this month and left a trail of smiles that numbered in the hundreds. Unfortunately, Kaseem Sinceno, a former Bears player, didn’t know Taylor Swift when the young girl asked him whether he knew her.
Last week, the Chicago Bears NFL team traveled to Edinburgh to conduct their Mini Monster youth coaching clinic. Over the course of two days at Juniper Green Primary School, 600 kids from eight different schools in the city participated in the 90-minute coaching sessions.
Sinceno, who stated: “It was awesome to be able to make the trip to Edinburgh,” and Gustavo Silva, the Bears Manager of Youth Football and Community Programs, led the sessions. Such initiatives provide the ideal introduction to American football for young people.
“Young people are our sport’s future, so it was wonderful to see so many happy faces and positive energy today.”
“You do realize that your health comes first?” Gustavo informs me. The most crucial factor is that health is the one item that cannot be purchased with money. It is possible for anyone to be healthy. We are aware that maintaining good health can be more difficult in some places.
“We therefore have a strong desire to promote healthy eating and an active lifestyle among people.” That is the top option overall. That should come first.
After that, there are ancillary opportunities. We have the chance to properly present American football in a pleasant and interesting way, much like in the UK.
They hope that by taking a grassroots, individual approach that emphasizes accessibility and enjoyment, people in the UK would become interested in the sport. As Gustavo puts it: “We are trying to grow the sport by making it inclusive of everybody, making it accessible to everybody.” We are in the UK for that reason, too.
We’re working to make it user-friendly. We desire diversity in the game. There are those who are running backs and those who are receivers. The game makes use of a plethora of diverse skill sets. One of American football’s biggest assets, in my opinion, and one of the reasons I adore it, is that we feel like there is a place for everyone in the game.
“And if there’s something preventing people from accessing the game, we need to find it and eliminate it.” In the UK, access has been the largest obstacle.
Yes, access is important. Specialized equipment and room are needed for American football. When I spoke with Graeme from Juniper Green, who has assisted in planning the camps with other schools, he told me the Bears have discussed equipment provision with him.
