In response to the Thomas Urban letter, “Pete Rose belongs in the baseball Hall of Fame”
The one problem NOT listed in that letter for current Hall of Fame inductees is gambling on games of baseball where the gambler took an active part on the field or managing the team. Pete Rose claims that he only gambled on his team to win but what did that tell his gambling connections when he didn’t bet? It gave them the idea to bet that Pete’s team would more likely lose that game.
Did manager Pete withhold certain starting pitchers and relief pitchers from games he expected to lose and then use them in games he bet on to win?
More importantly, Pete was compromising the integrity of the game, leaving it open for games to appear fixed if the betting was discovered by the media.
