Jude Bellingham, a product of Birmingham City’s academy, has never shied away from expressing his pride in his origins, even as he rose to prominence on the world football scene. Bellingham, a Stourbridge native and star of Wast Hills, rose quickly from being a brash Championship adolescent to becoming one of the world’s most gifted players before turning twenty-one.
Just last week, Bellingham said without hesitation, “Birmingham City,” when asked which stadium would be his favorite to play in as a visiting. Although I doubt I’ll get the opportunity, I would really like to play there as an opposition player. We can accomplish that when Birmingham returns to the Champions League in a few years.”
After his own very emotional private departure in 2020, he returned to watch brother Jobe—who has now departed St Andrew’s himself—in action as a Borussia Dortmund player. Although Bellingham’s career has drastically outpaced the Blues’ own trajectory in the last five years and he has traveled to Real Madrid, he still considers himself a Bluenose. He even has his own mural dedicated to him outside the stadium.

Bellingham was asked by TNT Sports for his response to such a victory after winning the Champions League against Dortmund at Wembley on Saturday night. This was all before a brief break and he will return to Germany to try to assist England win EURO 2024 later this summer. In the 2-0 victory, Bellingham had helped Vinicius Jr. following late goal by teammate Dani Carvajal.
“Being a player in these games has always been my goal. There are a lot of individuals in life who tell you that you are incapable of doing things. Days like this one serve as a reminder that nights like this one let you realize that, even when things get difficult and you start to question whether it’s all worth it. Up until I saw my parents’ faces there, I was fine.
“They could have returned home by seven most of the times, but instead they were leaving for football games at eleven or twelve in the evening. My younger brother, for whom I am attempting to set an example. It’s beyond words for me.”
And to the pleasure of Blues aficionados, Bellingham began his interview with the lyrics from Keep Right On, “you go through life,” a subliminal reference to his incredible trip to what he called “the best night of his life.”
