LAS VEGAS RAIDERS NEWS
Right now, the majority of draft talk surrounding the Las Vegas Raiders is how the team could move up into the top-4, or even top-3, to land the franchise quarterback Antonio Pierce and Mark Davis so desperately crave, like every head coach and GM in the NFL.
That’s going to be extremely expensive and it’s not the best idea for a team that has as many holes as the Raiders. There’s also Gardner Minshew, who at least brings stability to the QB position, even if the ceiling isn’t high as one likes.
In other words: trading up isn’t a good idea.
There’s an obvious draft trade partner for the Arizona Cardinals and no one else is even remotely close

What is a good idea, however, is trading back. It makes a ton of sense for the Raiders and they could still nab either a Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix at, let’s say, 22 if they traded with the Philadelphia Eagles. Both guys are seen as potential starters at the NFL level and one could certainly become the Raiders QB for the next decade.
The Eagles have made some form of a first-round trade each of the last three years and two of those trades were moves up the board. They also have two second-rounders, so the draft capital is there for a move up.
Pierce even said Monday that McCarthy has to be in the top three, but all I heard was a guy playing poker. I don’t think the Raiders have McCarthy in the top three on their draft board. – Vic Tafur, The Athletic
A trade back to 22 would net a pretty solid haul, as well. One only has travel back to 2021 to find a solid comparison in the Vikings-Jets trade. The Jets traded up from No. 23 to No. 14 in order to select Alijah Vera-Tucker. On top of the 14th pick, the Vikings also sent a fourth-rounder. In return, they received the 23rd overall pick and two third-rounders in the 2021 NFL Draft.
It’s fair to think Las Vegas would get one of the Eagles’ second-rounders and then a Day 3 pick in the deal. The extra second-rounder would really come in handy and could even allow the Raiders to trade into the back end of the first round.
The Raiders also wouldn’t have to worry too much about one of the guys getting nabbed, because quarterback isn’t a glaring need for the teams from 14-21. Now, there are a couple of teams where it would make some sense, like the Seattle Seahawks. Maybe the Rams. That’s definitely a lower percentage chance, though.
And going back to Minshew real quick – he stabilizes the position, which would allow a guy picked in the 20s more time to develop, as opposed to going in the top-5. It’s logical both in the financial and team-building aspects.
It’s easy to get lost in all the quarterback hoopla, especially at the top. This year’s class is way different in most, though, when considering the depth. The Raiders need to take full advantage of this and not sell out the future, because that’s easily the best path to take.
