John Calipari Issues Stern Message to NCAA Before March Madness 2024
ALEK ARENDMAR 20, 2024
A big storyline ahead of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is the NCAA’s discussions about expanding March Madness.
The NCAA is reportedly considering expanding the tournament to no more than 80 teams. Currently, 64 teams make the Big Dance. An additional four teams are in the mix in the play-in games.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari was asked about the NCAA’s idea to expand March Madness, and let’s just say he’s going to do everything he can to prevent.
The one-time national champion head coach thinks the tournament is perfect as it is, and expanding it will water down the prestigious sports event.
“I hope it stays where it is,” Calipari said Wednesday, per The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker. “People get mad at the committee — you won’t believe this, I’ve been mad at that committee … but it’s part of the NCAA Tournament.”

“Keep it where it is,” he added. “Don’t mess with something this good.”

He’s right. The NCAA tournament is a perfect sporting event. Why change it when there’s no reason to? Well, it’s a simple answer: money.
The NCAA will, unfortunately, always find a way to make more money, even if it comes at the cost of the sport and what fans want. Take college football for example. The 12-team College Football Playoff hasn’t even started and leaders have already approved a 14-team playoff for 2025.

Long story short, the NCAA will never do what’s in the best interest of its fans, players and coaches. But maybe, and that’s a big maybe, if more prominent coaches like John Calipari speak up, the NCAA will hold off on expanding March Madness for now.
