BBC SPORT – BREAKING: Done Deal – Benjamin Šeško Agrees to Join Newcastle United in Stunning Transfer Coup

Newcastle, 31 July 2025 – Newcastle United have completed the sensational signing of Slovenian striker Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig, in a deal reported to be worth £72 million plus add-ons, BBC Sport understands.

After weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations, Šeško finally agreed personal terms with the Magpies and completed his medical at St. James’ Park earlier this morning. The 22-year-old striker has signed a five-year deal and is expected to be unveiled to fans later this week.

The Slovenian international becomes Newcastle’s most expensive signing under their new ownership, as the club continues to flex its financial muscle in the transfer market. Šeško, known for his pace, physicality, and eye for goal, scored 18 goals in all competitions for RB Leipzig last season.

> “I chose Newcastle because of the project, the passion, and the fans,” Šeško said in his first official interview. “I believe we can achieve great things here.”

Manager Eddie Howe expressed delight over the signing, calling Šeško a “game-changer” and “one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe.”

> “We’ve followed Benjamin for a long time,” Howe told BBC Sport. “His potential is enormous, and he fits perfectly into our playing philosophy.”

The deal also includes a £15 million goal bonus clause if Šeško scores 20+ goals this season, and RB Leipzig will retain a 10% sell-on clause.

Šeško will wear the number 14 shirt and could make his debut in the Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur next week.

The signing marks a major statement of intent from Newcastle as they look to push into the Premier League’s elite and compete in Europe consistently. The move is also seen as a blow to Chelsea and AC Milan, who were both linked with Šeško throughout the summer.

Fans flooded social media with excitement, with the hashtag #SeskoIsMagpie trending across the UK within minutes of the announcement.

The Magpies are reportedly still active in the market, targeting another midfielder and a right-back before the window closes
