**BREAKING NEWS: Los Angeles Lakers MVP Luka Dončić Invests \$7.5 Million to Transform House Into Shelter for Homeless Youth in South Los Angeles**

*Los Angeles, CA – May 16, 2025* — In a stunning act of generosity and social responsibility, NBA superstar and Los Angeles Lakers MVP Luka Dončić has announced a \$7.5 million personal investment to convert a private residence he owns in South Los Angeles into a state-of-the-art transitional shelter for homeless youth.

The 26-year-old Slovenian-born basketball icon, known for his dazzling skills on the court and growing presence off of it, revealed the initiative during a press conference held at the property on Friday morning. The three-story, 15,000-square-foot home — formerly a luxury residence — will undergo a complete renovation to serve as a safe haven for homeless youth aged 16 to 24.

“I’ve been incredibly blessed in my life and career,” Dončić said. “But every day on my way to the arena, I see the struggle. Too many young people in this city don’t have a bed to sleep in or a place to feel safe. This is about using what I’ve been given to give others a real chance.”

### A Shelter Designed with Purpose

The facility, to be named **The Dončić House**, will offer not only housing but comprehensive services including mental health counseling, job training, education support, legal aid, and 24-hour on-site staff. The project is being developed in partnership with *Safe Step Forward*, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit specializing in youth homelessness and rehabilitation.

Construction is slated to begin in early July with a projected opening date of spring 2026. Architects and social workers are working closely to ensure that the environment fosters healing and long-term independence.

“This will not be a shelter in the traditional sense,” said Marisa Caldwell, Executive Director of *Safe Step Forward*. “It’s a home. It’s a foundation. Luka’s vision is about dignity, empowerment, and investing in young people who’ve been overlooked for far too long.”

### A Growing Crisis

The move comes amid a worsening homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, where recent city reports estimate more than 4,000 unhoused youth live on the streets or in unstable conditions. Advocates have long called for more private-public partnerships to address systemic housing insecurity and mental health issues among young Angelenos.

City Councilmember Hugo Ramirez praised Dončić’s commitment, calling it “a model for what community leadership looks like.”

“Luka is not just putting his money where his mouth is — he’s changing lives. This is the kind of forward-thinking solution we need from leaders in all sectors, not just government,” Ramirez said.

### More Than an Athlete

Since joining the Lakers in 2024, Dončić has become a cultural and philanthropic force in Los Angeles. In addition to his efforts with youth homelessness, he has launched educational grants, supported refugee programs, and led community basketball clinics throughout the city. His donation for *The Dončić House* is believed to be one of the largest private contributions to youth homelessness solutions by a professional athlete in recent U.S. history.

Dončić, who is widely expected to win his second MVP award this season, emphasized that his goals off the court are just as important as those on it.

“Basketball gave me a platform, but what I do with that platform is what matters most,” he said. “If even one kid finds hope here, then it’s all worth it.”

### Community Reaction

News of the announcement has sparked a wave of admiration and support across social media and the local community. Lakers fans and advocacy groups alike praised Dončić’s dedication to a cause that hits close to home for many in the city.

Plans are also underway to engage local youth in the design and naming of different rooms within *The Dončić House*, adding a sense of ownership and community involvement to the project.

As the press conference concluded, Dončić stood at the entrance of what will soon be a place of refuge, surrounded by volunteers, youth advocates, and neighbors.

“Everyone deserves a hom

e,” he said. “Let’s build one together.”
